Gin Blossoms revisit the tragic backstory of their multi-platinum smash 'New Miserable Experience,' which turns 25 this year. Paul NatkinArchive PhotosGetty. Its a miracle that the Gin Blossoms breakthrough album, New Miserable Experience, exists at all. When the band left Tempe, Arizona, in 1992, headed for Memphis famed Ardent Studios to record their first album for A&M Records, the mood was far from optimistic. A first attempt at cutting the record in 1991 in Los Angeles was a 100,000 disaster. The Gin Blossoms were one of the more truly damned rock & roll bands to grace the pop charts in the 1990s. The group was founded and spiritually led by singer-guitarist Doug Hopkins, who also wrote the band's best songs however, by the time New Miserable Experience marked the band's major-label debut in 1992, Hopkins had been kicked out his bandmates had apparently tired of dealing with his alcoholism. Built around the damaged psyche and unquestionable talent of founderlead singerguitarist Doug Hopkins, the groups finest hour was its 1992 major-label debut New Miserable Experience. The torment and twisted humor implied by its title speaks volumes - the music here soars and jangles like the Byrds and . at their best, while the lyrics unsparingly detail failed love affairs and blown opportunities. The breakthrough album by Arizona power-popsters Gin Blossoms featured the hit singles Found Out About You, Until I Fall Away, and Hey Jealousy. The latter tune was written by guitarist Doug Hopkins, who was fired for alcoholism just before sessions for the LP wrapped. Hopkins committed suicide in 1993, right as the group was finally starting to take off. New Miserable Experience Q&A.
