Produced by Len Dell'Amico and Grateful Dead Productions. It was released by Monterey Home Video, on VHS in 1997 and on DVD in 1999, with a running time of 2 hours 30 minutes, and by Pioneer Entertainment, on LaserDisc in 1997. This title includes a composite of two performances - July 17 and 19, 1989, at the Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, WI - and is available on both the VHS and DVD home video formats. The somewhat cryptic title is a geographical reference to the distinct incline in the general admission section of the venue. The summer of 1989 saw the Grateful Dead commencing one of the final epic zeniths in terms of consistently brilliant performances. It was my first Grateful Dead concert and I was 26 years old. At that time my best friend Mike was a helicopter pilot for a company called Ditka- Kirk Aviation based in Valparaiso Indiana. They had been contracted to fly the band from the Americana Resort formerly the Playboy club to the amphitheater all three days of the concert. These 3 shows at the end of the tour & at a ski area, hence Downhill from Here were legendary status immediately especially as tapes had started to spread faster and finally more liberally. These three shows were discussed as must-haves for a couple years - in an era where looking forward was as competitive. Downhill From Here-Alpine Valley. This video encapsulates the best Deads performance that I've seen. The song-set also features many songs that I really like: Let the Good Times Roll, It's all Over Now, Desolation Row, Standing On the Moon, Uncle John. There is little attempt to sex-up' the footage, preferring instead to focus on the band. My only wish is that they had filmed the ecstasy in the audience when they played And We Bid You Good Night for the first time since December 31, 1978. It was an incredible moment. Deal is particularly good. Jerry is having a lot of fun here. The second set is all from the 07-17-89 show. If the first set got you excited, then this is going to blow you away.
