Igor Stravinsky's Perséphone is rarely recorded and performed because it is. At any rate, conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen, leading the Finnish National Opera Chorus, Children's Chorus, and Orchestra in a well-recorded live performance, makes an excellent case for broader distribution. The work is in French, with a text by André Gide that Stravinsky broke up into choppy syllables, much to Gide's annoyance. This new recording from Finland with Andrew Staples and Pauline Cheviller shows a piece with peculiars colors, describing Earth and Hades. October, 2018. The best recording of Perséphone that I know. Stravinskys Perséphone 1934 is a dynamic music-theatrical narration of the myth of Persephones abduction to the underworld and return to earth. They join forces with the Finnish National Operas chorus, childrens chorus and orchestra, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, in a breath-taking performance that lifts out the pieces transformative power. By Igor StravinskyPauline Cheviller, Finnish National Opera Chorus, Finnish National Opera Orchestra & Esa-Pekka Salonen. Perséphone Persephone is a musical work mélodrame for speaker, solo singers, chorus, dancers and orchestra with music by Igor Stravinsky and a libretto by André Gide. It was first performed under the direction of the composer at the Opéra in Paris, on 30 April 1934 in a double bill with the ballet Diane de Poitiers by Jacques Ibert. The premiere was staged by the ballet company of Ida Rubinstein, with Rubinstein herself dancing and speaking the part of Persephone and the tenor René Maison singing. Andrew Clements. But in Perséphone, the melodrama for tenor, female narrator, chorus, childrens chorus and large orchestra that he completed in 1934 to a text by André Gide, he composed one of the most radiant and lyrically beautiful scores to be found anywhere in 20th-century music. As Esa-Pekka Salonens beautifully modulated performance demonstrates, however, those inconsistencies do not matter at all when the music is unfolded with such meticulous attention to detail. Nothing is forced, and all the elements, sung, played and spoken, are integrated so carefully. Seiji OzawaChicago Symphony Orchestra.
