Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club. Kooper had just split after masterminding the groundbreaking Child Is Father to the Man 1968 version of Blood, Sweat & Tears. Bloomfield was fresh from a stint with the likewise brass-driven Electric Flag, while Stills was late of Buffalo Springfield and still a few weeks away from a full-time commitment to David Crosby and Graham Nash. In May 1968, both Al Kooper and Michael Bloomfield found themselves in strange positions. Kooper - who had played the distinctive organ hook on Bob Dylans Like a Rolling Stone before joining the Blues Project and then forming Blood, Sweat & Tears - had left BS&T and was serving as an A&R man for Columbia Records. Bloomfield - who had played with Kooper on several Dylan sessions and had come to prominence as a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band - had just left his band the Electric Flag. The album Super Session grew out of a single nine hour jam in 1968 by guitarist Mike Bloomfield and multi-instrumentalist Al Kooper and Stephen Stills of CSNY fame. Kooper and Bloomfield had both previously worked in support of Bob Dylan, in concert and appearing on his ground-breaking classic, Highway 61 Revisited. Kooper, fresh from having assembled and recorded the inaugural incarnation of Blood, Sweat & Tears, booked two days of studio time with Bloomfield in May 1968 in Los Angeles.
