Mohammed Sharif Khan, Ustad Mohammad Sharif Khan. Anthology of World Music: The Music of Pakistan, V. CD - Rounder Select ROUCD 5147. Overview . Mohammad Sharif Khan Poonchwaley's Album Pakistan I. Listen to all tracks of Pakistan I for venerable Mohammad Sharif Khan here performs a few pieces on the sitar. While the album claims to be showcasing the music of Pakistan, the music performed here is really North Indian classical at its essence. Then again, much Pakistani classical music is of course the same as Indian, the only distinctions being political ones. Khan hails from the Poochwala gharana in Pakistan, of course, which brings some slight differences into play between his playing style and that of other performers. These differences aren't really so noticeable as one might imagine, but they're there none. The Music of Pakistan Urdu: پاکستان کی موسیقی includes diverse elements ranging from music from various parts of South Asia as well as Central Asian, Middle Eastern, and modern-day Western popular music influences. With these multiple influences, a distinctive Pakistani sound has emerged. The legendary sitar player Mohammad Sharif Khan Poonchhwaley belongs to Poonch gharana of sitar. Ustad Rais Khan is another prominent sitar player of Pakistan. Shaukat Hussain, Tari Khan and Tafo Khan have been exponents of classical tabla playing from Pakistan.
