Sugar Tax is the eighth album by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark OMD, released in May 1991 on Virgin Records. It was the group's first studio album since 1986, and the first of three recorded without co-founder Paul Humphreys, who had departed in 1989. Featuring singer Andy McCluskey with a new backing band, it leans more towards the dance-pop genre that was prevalent in the early 1990s, than the experimental brand of synthpop which characterised OMD's earlier recordings. The title Sugar Tax refers to everything sweet having a price, particularly in relationships. The actual track Sugar Tax, ironically, doesnt appear on the album due to it being unfinished prior to the release of the album. Sailing On The Seven Seas was the first single taken from the album. The song came about when Andy was walking down the road and the Gary Glitter-esque drum rhythm came into his head. Pandoras Box was inspired by silent movie star Louise Brooks. The song title refers to Brooks most famous film Pandoras Box 1929. Then You Turn Away was the third release from the album. 1991's SUGAR TAX was the first new album by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark since 1986's THE PACIFIC AGE. Much had changed in the intervening five years. Surprisingly, SUGAR TAX sounds remarkably like earlier OMD albums, leadingone to wonder how important Humphrey's role in the band hadactually been. Less overtly poppy and more atmospheric than THE PACIFIC AGE or that album's predecessor CRUSH, SUGARTAX is in many ways a return to the darker hues and sonic experiments of earlier records like DAZZLE SHIPS or ARCHITECTURE AND MORALITY. My fav. track from the album Sugar Tax. Listen album. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. HITS: Pandora's Box, Call My Name. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark It was group's first studio album since 1986, and the first of three recorded without co-founder Paul Humphreys, who had departed in 1989. Essentially a solo venture for singer Andy McCluskey under the OMD moniker, it leans more towards the dance-pop genre that was prevalent in the early 1990s, than the experimental brand of synthpop which characterised the band's earlier recordings. With the split between McCluskey and the rest of the band resolved by the former's decision to carry on with the band's name on his own, the question before Sugar Tax's appearance was whether the change would spark a new era of success for someone who clearly could balance artistic and commercial impulses in a winning fashion. The answer, based on the album - not entirely
