In 1969, Pharoah Sanders was incredibly active, recording no less than four albums and releasing three. The band on Jewels of Thought is largely the same as on Deaf Dumb Blind and Karma, with a few changes. Idris Muhammad has, with the exception of Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah Hum Allah, replaced Roy Haynes, and Richard Davis has permanently replaced Reggie Workman and Ron Carter, though Cecil McBee is still present for the extra bottom sound. Leon Thomas a. Pharoah Sanders. Jewels of Thought. Anthology Recordings. Where Coltrane kicked off his album with a quick 30 seconds of fanfare before diving in, Sanders lets Burrell and Sharrock lead with almost five minutes of roiling piano and guitar, backed by bells, thrumming bass, and cinematic tom rolls. It doesnt take much to imagine a sacred rite of initiation performed in a darkened room filled with the scent of frankincense. This gives way to a bowed bass-and-piccolo duet between Grimes and Sanders that owes more to Toru Takemitsus fusion of European modernism and traditional Japanese music than New Yorks jazz nightclubs. Pharoah Sanders got a reputation quickly while playing with Coltrane as perhaps THE most out there player of them all. Those vocals, by Leon Thomas, don't pop up here until the second album, Jewels of Thought, but they are amazing to behold. Newcomers might, in fact, want to go straight to Sanders' most famous album, Karma, before coming here. Jewels of Thought picks up largely where Karma left off, continuing a spiritual quest while building and slowing the energy around the vocals and, of course, Sanders' saxophone. Album 1969 2 Songs.
