Lightbulb Sun is the sixth studio album by British progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, first released in May 2000, and later reissued in 2008 on CD, DVD-A surround sound, and vinyl. This album, along with their prior album Stupid Dream, is considered to have a more commercial, poppier sound, as opposed to the abstract instrumental sound of their prior albums, or the heavier metal sound in their subsequent albums of the 2000s. Some older fans looked askance at Lightbulb Sun, feeling it was verging on overt commercialism and admittedly, the near power ballad solo on Where We Would Be is a bit odd. Unfortunately, the middle section of the album is extremely boring and it leaves much more to be desired considering the sheer potential of other songs on the record. Lightbulb Sun was Porcupine Tree's first foray into more commercial terrain and may have initially taken fans by surprise but has become a beloved entry in their impressive catalog. Go Unlimited. the first album I purchased as part of my backtrack through Porcupine tree albums. In Lightbulb Sun, you can hear the progression from their earlier music to their later music - some heavy tracks Russia on Ice, to some more mellow, downtempo tracks.
