The religious text of the cantata John of Damascus for chorus and orchestra drew the best out of the young composer the three-movement work features impressive counterpoint and effective choral writing. The later Suite de Concert for violin and orchestra, a violin concerto disguised as a pastiche of Baroque forms, displays the composer's humor rather than his learning. Album 2009 15 Songs. I have filed this under choral even though 46 out of 73 minutes on this CD are orchestral as the 'Suite De Concert' featuring Ilya Kaler on violin, pleasant though it is, falls beyond the remit of this review. However the Cantata is well worth noticing and at the usual super-budget price from Naxos perhaps some of our more adventurous listeners may take a chance on it. A nephew of Alexander Sergeyevich Taneyev, Taneyev was a pupil of Tchaikovsky at the Moscow Conservatory, studying the piano with the director of the Conservatory, Nikolay Rubinstein. Thomas Sanderling's first disc in the Naxos Taneyev series was praised by 'The Guardian' for its strongly characterized performances. For my money not that much with Naxos, I'll admit this new entry boasts the most compelling and rewarding discmate of all in Taneyev's early cantata John of DamascusThomas Sanderling has much to offer - most notably the full-throated sonority of the Gnesin ChoirIf you don't mind Sanderling's more reverent approach any quibbles with. Sergey Ivanovich Taneyev 1856-1915. 1 , Suite de concert, Op. The cantata Ioann Damaskin was the first serious composition that drew attention to Taneyev as a talented composer. It was inspired by Aleksey Tolstoys eponymous poem which, in twelve chapters, tells the life story of John of Damascus, St John Damascene, who lived in the seventh and eighth centuries. 1 Suite de concert, op. 28 2 , Thomas Sanderling, cond Ilya Kaler vn 2 Gnesin Academy Ch 1 Russian PO , NAXOS 72:15 Text and Translation. When it comes to the cantata, Ioann Damaskin , Naxos is up against serious competition from a fantastic recording of the work on Deutsche Grammophon with Mikhail Pletnev conducting the Russian National Orchestra and Moscow Chamber Chorus.
