Album

At Carnegie Hall is a live album by The Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane. It was recorded on 29 November 1957 at Thanksgiving Jazz, a benefit concert produced by Kenneth Lee Karpe for the Morningside Community Center in Harlem. Other acts performing included: Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Sonny Rollins, and Chet Baker with Zoot Sims. The recording, by Voice of America, documents two sets by the Monk Quartet with Coltrane that night an early set tracks 1-5 and a late set. Thelonious Monk Quartet, John Coltrane. Gus Arnheim, Charles N. The John Coltrane on this date is far more assured than he had been four months earlier on the Five Spot date and on the initial Prestige side Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane. He'd been with Monk for four months and had absorbed his complex, multivalent musical system completely. It's clear from the opening track, Monk's Mood, where the pair play in duet, that Coltrane is confident and moving into his own. What an album Monk seems at his quirky best here, bouncing around the keyboard on Epistrophy, while Coltrane alternates on tracks between ripping it up and playing it smooth and glorious. This is a great performance from two of the best musicians in jazz history. I'm on maybe ten listens so far and it's impossible to pick a stand-out track or two. Monk's Mood 7:52 2. Evidence 4:41 3. Now a forgotten November 1957 Carnegie Hall concert taped by Voice Of America radio has been discovered by the Library of Congress with two appearances by the quartet. These two 25-minute, five-tune sets feature the quartet in great fidelity and unbelievable. At Carnegie Hall. Play album. Get album. But Monk's strongest suit on this set is his third hand, John Coltrane. The insert shows a playbill on which Coltrane's name is half the size of Zoot Sims' and Sonny Rollins' names-appropriate, since his performance is equally subordinated to, or tempered by, a commitment to Monk's music. That is not to say that we don't hear much of the expected Coltrane scalular dexterity especially on Blue Monk, but at no point would it seem appropriate to generalize about his playing on this recording as sheets of sound
