We're a Happy Family: A Tribute to Ramones is a 2003 tribute album to the Ramones by various artists. It started when Johnny Ramone was confronted with the idea of a tribute album and was asked if he wanted to participate, to which he agreed, as long as he would have full control over the project. He was able to get Rob Zombie as a co-producer, and call upon different bands to participate. Rob Zombie also did the cover artwork, and Stephen King, a Ramones fan, wrote the liner notes. Most notably, Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie both take what were short and sarcastic punk songs and turn them into humorless, plodding industrial anthems. Contributions from Kiss, Garbage, and Pete Yorn fair considerably better, if only because they choose songs that fit their style, but only a few artists really try to personalize their performances. It's no surprise that Ramones descendents like Green Day, Rancid, and the Offspring stick close to the tired and true, while headbanger James Hetfield makes 53rd & 3rd sound like a Metallica song. Several bands were still riding on a huge wave of success in the 90's, I'm looking at you Rancid and Marilyn Manson, and they really seemed to put some effort into covering these great Ramones classics.
