A Storm in Heaven is the debut studio album by the English rock band the Verve, at the time known just as Verve, released on 21 June 1993 on the Hut label. It charted at number twenty-seven in the UK. The album was recorded at Sawmills Studios in Cornwall over a seven-week period between December 1992 and January 1993, with John Leckie in the producer's chair, and took its title from Jay Stevens' book Storming Heaven, which detailed the effects of LSD on the United States during the counterculture. Nick McCabe admitted he found work with John Leckie difficult and was ultimately dissatisfied with the album's sound: ''I just found it really difficult. I had something in my mind, he had something in his, and I generally ended up doing it somewhere. Whereas future Verve masterpieces A Northern Soul and Urban Hymns would feature succinct song structures for the most part and instantly memorable verses and choruses, the group's 1993 full-length debut, A Storm in Heaven, was based on buoyant, extended psychedelic passages. Looking back today, it was an interesting and original musical direction, since at the time, angst-ridden Seattle bands and their many copycats were all the rage. Verve first album, released back in '93 is actually really good. No big smash singles or contrived pop attempts here. Just some sprawling psychedelic
