This is the first recording on period instruments of the two symphonies which Carl Maria von Weber composed in 1806/7 for the Duke of Württemberg's orchestra in Karlsruhe (Germany).

In his thirty-nine years 1786 1826, Weber managed an intense diversity of activity. As a pianist, he was admired by Liszt. As a conductor, he abandoned direction from the keyboard in favour of a consistent use of the baton and rearranged the positioning of the players in terms of tonal blend. Das Hornkonzert ist sicherlich ein Highlight: Man glaubt es kaum, was Anthony Halstead auf seinem Naturhorn alles bewerkstelligt das ist große Klasse. Das Horn ist allerdings auch stark in den Vordergrund gerückt, das Orchester agiert ohnehin eher im Hintergrund. Die Klangwiedergabe ist ungewöhnlich und störend hallig. I love the Weber overtures and his music in general. I am very disappointed in this double set of discs.
