Switched-On Bach is the first studio album by the American composer Wendy Carlos, released under the name Walter Carlos, in October 1968 by Columbia Records. Produced by Carlos and Rachel Elkind, the album is a collection of pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach performed by Carlos and Benjamin Folkman on a Moog synthesizer. Switched-On Bach 2000 is a bit of a misnomer. Wendy Carlos released this on the Telarc label in 1992 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of her classic recording, Switched-On Bach. That recording, remarkably futuristic in 1967, is still a major milestone in the history of e-music. It is also, alas, long since unavailable. This is actually Side 2 of Switched-On Bach by Wendy Carlos. I was 11 when I first heard, and had to have, this album on reel to reel tape. I played it all the time at home. The original Switched-On Bach was made in 1968, when synthesiser music barely existed. Carlos recorded a live performance of every line of each piece onto multi-track tape, using a timelessly gorgeous-sounding analogue synthesiser the size of three washing machines to create it. That was a real accomplishment, whereas this 1992 remake is not so impressive. Although Switched-On Bach 2000 is still quite nice to listen to of course, it is devoid of much of what made the original album so very cool. It is like listening to very well-made MIDI files run through a not-so modern sample library. This pressing, unlike Switched-On Bach 2000, has a DIDX code on the disc face. Packaging: Jewel case.
